If one were to select a single word to describe Stephan Micus, “versatile” is as likely as any to leap to mind. In addition to being a talented vocalist, he is the quintessential multi-instrumentalist, playing all of the parts on his recordings, using copious over-dubbing to create massed choirs and orchestras.
Micus plays a wide variety of instruments; strings, flutes, percussion, and reeds. He
has acquired them from a host of cultures that span the globe, studying many instruments
“ in the field,” before utilizing them in his own creative work. Micus’ idiosyncratic approach has proved fruitful. He has been prolific, recording, to date, sixteen albums for the ECM label. But no matter which record store bin you find his CDs in, just don’t call him a “World Musician.”
